What are Spermicides and Nonoxynol 9?

In days gone by, it was thought that the spermicide known as Nonoxynol 9 added extra protection against STD’s including AIDS and in pregnancy prevention. Research in the past few years has shown that lubricants containing Nonoxynol 9 and condoms that contain Nonoxynol 9 coating can actually be worse for you than condoms or lubricants without spermicide. This is because many people are allergic to Nonoxynol 9 and this allergic reaction can cause small sores to appear. These sores can actually cause HIV to be transmitted more easily.

Besides not being effective against the transmission of HIV, it has also be shown not to protect women from the bacteria that causes gonorrhea and chlamydia. Both the HIV link and the gonorrhea and chlamydia link have been well-documented. Of course, if a condom with Nonoxynol 9 is the only option, this is still better than having unprotected sex. Using condoms with Nonoxynol 9 should only be for partners in monogamous relationships and who are both HIV negative.

Regular lubricated condoms will still give you excellent protection against most STD’s, HIV, and pregnancy so these should be used every time you engage in intercourse with or without a non-spermicidal lubricant.
