Safe Sex with Condoms

A condom is a male contraceptive device that offers protection against unwanted pregnancies and safeguards from the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. Nowadays most modern condoms are fabricated from latex because of its durable, waterproof and elastic properties. Polyurethane is also commonly used even though this material is more expensive. On the other hand it does present many advantages over latex especially seeing as it can be used with oil-based lubricants and is less allergenic.

Condoms are submitted to various safety measures and quality testes, to insure that every single one is completely secure for use. Although most condoms are extremely durable and don’t tear easily, there are a few safety precautions that must be taken into consideration during sexual intercourse. A condom is conceived to be used only once and should never be reused, even if during prolonged sexual intercourse. When using a condom never use any sexual enhancement objects that could perforate or damage the latex. Neglecting to do so could cause the condom to lose its natural characteristics leaving both partners unprotected from contracting sexually transmitted diseases. When using oil oil-based lubricants it is strongly advised to read the instructions thoroughly beforehand to insure that the condom in question is appropriate and capable of resisting such lubricants. This is very important because latex condoms are prone to lose elasticity when used with oil-based lubricants which could result in it falling out during sexual intercourse.

One of the most common mistakes committed when employing this type of contraceptive, is the incorrect application of the condom before use. Failing to apply the condom firmly and correctly on the erect penis will permit the condom to fall out during penetration and in this way increase the chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. A condom should always be unrolled completely all the way down to the base of the penis while maintaining the top part firmly squeezed. This will insure that there is sufficient room for the semen after ejaculation.

Condoms are one of the safest and most widely used contraceptives on the market. When used correctly the changes of contracting unwanted pregnancies is around 2% which is considerably lower than when compared to other alternatives. It is always good to remember that sexual intercourse can be perfectly safe, but for this to happen a few necessary precautions will have to be taken beforehand to insure total protection for both sexual partners.
