Contraceptive Sponge
The contraceptive sponge is an insertable form of contraception that relies on spermicide to prevent accidental pregnancy from occurring. The sponge is soft, strong, and made out of polyurethane so it is meant to feel like vaginal tissue.
You activate the sponge by putting about two tablespoons of water over the sponge before insertion. After this is done you can insert the sponge and there is a loop at the end to help you remove it after intercourse. The sponge can be inserted in the vagina anytime before sex and can be in the vagina for 24 hours. You can use the sponge for each sex act within this time frame without needed more spermacide, however after 24 hours of insertion it will no longer be effective.
You must also make sure to leave the sponge inside the vagina for at least six hours after the last sex act so that it can continue working and killing sperm. You should also take out the sponge after 24 hours. The sponge is not reusable and it should be thrown out, not flushed down the toilet. The sponge is about 84-91% effective if used every time and correctly to prevent against unwanted pregnancy. The contraceptive sponge does not prevent against STD’s and a condom should be used if this is a concern.
