Condoms for Women?
Female condoms are the condom for her! These condoms are inserted internally by the women prior to sex and are about as long as a male condom, but wider. The female condom is made out of polyurethane which transmits body heat, but newer versions are being made from nitrile. Female condoms have a small ringed side that is inserted, while a large ring opening remains on the outside of the vagina during sex.
These condoms are used in many countries, but have been heavily promoted in developing countries to give women more access to contraception that they have control over. They are still not nearly as popular as the male condom. About 14 million female condoms are given away in the developing world each year, but this still pales in comparison to the 6-9 billion traditional condoms that are distributed.
Female condoms are more difficult to insert than male condoms are to put on. There is also a sort of noise associated with intercourse using a female condom because of the extra ring hanging outside of the vagina. Female condoms also cost about 2-3 times more than a male condom. Although they are meant to be used once, they can be used more than once if a woman has little other options. Female condoms can also be used with an oil-based lubricant, as opposed to latex condoms which can not be used with such a lube.
